Video Tutorial

the word "speed" bumps up against the word "quality"

This library tutorial helps learners differentiate between stages in scholarly publishing including preprint, postprint, and ahead-of-print. It highlights tensions between the potential to speed up science offered by preprint servers and the quality assured through the peer-review process. I produced and edited the tutorial using Reaper, iMovie, and Canva.

I worked with two peers to write learning objectives and a script to meet the needs of our client, the Whatcom Community College Library.

Learning Significance

  1. To support accessibility, I created an SRT file with captions for the tutorial, and selected b-roll footage that represents diverse researchers and environments. Because I produced this tutorial while campus was closed during COVID-19, I relied on existing media that is licensed for educational use.

I sought to balance the relevance of the speed vs. quality conversation during the COVID-19 pandemic with an evergreen description of the scholarly publishing stages to extend the shelf life of this tutorial past the current moment.
